Welcome to the Townsville Model Marine Club -
You can find us in the beautiful surroundings of The Lakes, adjacent to the Mercure Inn and The Lakes Holiday Park, located close to the city and two kilometres from the airport. The bustling garrison city of Townsville is the Gateway to Tropical North Queensland, and is a popular holiday destination for Australian and international tourists. Hotel and guesthouse accommodation is plentiful with a wide range of standards and prices.
Lake Details: the Model Yachting enclosure is part of a large man-made flood mitigation water basin, consisting of two interconnecting tidal lakes; Paradise Lake and Currlea Lake. The lakes were formed in 1987 to form part of the South Townsville Drainage System scheme, the major outlet is the Woolcock Street culvert, which is regulated by a tidal gate at its junction with Ross Creek. The average depth of water in Lake Currlea and the Model Yachting enclosure is about 2.5 metres, and has an area 100,000 sq.m.
Access to the water is via Woolcock Street and adjacent to the lake-shore Mercure Inn car-park. There are firm concrete banks and a sturdy walkway around the lake.
A rescue dinghy complete with an electric outboard motor is available for both Club and Open events. Ample free parking is to be had in the Mercure Inn car park, directly behind the club facilities.
